About me

I have been a Moonj artisan for the past 15 years. I learnt the craft from my mother and grandmother, who were taught by theirs. This craft has been practiced in my family for generations and we are very proud of it. It is also a very important source of our family income and leads us to spending our days in making a variety of products in a variety of design to sell to the local markets or sellers who contact us. Here in Maheva, we work in groups of women, all helping each other to do better and lead through life.

Basketry, Moonj Basketry of Eastern Uttarpradesh, Weaving

The wildgrass bought efficiently to use by the women in Maheva is first hand picked, peeled, dried, dyed and then dried again. It is later soaked in water before weaving it using scissors & Sirahi.

The Moonj grass is a naturally growing wild grass found prominently near the banks of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna.

Dyeing, Weaving

Weaving involves the creation of a woven structure. The grasses are used in place of the warp and weft threads in Moonj Craftwork. Dyeing is the addition of colors to the peeled and dried grass.
