- Craft originated in West Bengal with the production of ' Masland ' mats of superfine variety with fine cotton under the production of the royal patronage in the seventeen hundreds. - Masland mats are made of ' Madurkhati ' , a rhizome based plant that is found in abundance in the districts of Purba and Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. - Traditionally, Musland mats are used for ritualistic and spiritual purposes but over the years, they have been modified to be used for utilitarian and decorative purposes. - Besides the conventional folding mat that is gaining popularity among many, Masland mats are now diversified into coasters, table runners, small utility containers etc. - The colouration of the madur sticks used to weave the Masland mats are organic, vegetable dyes to add colors of different shades. - The weaving of the Masland mats is very similar to the process of sari weaving and comes in superlative fine quality when finished.
