Himachal Pradesh – Kath-Khuni houses
Kath-Khuni houses are native houses from the state of Himachal Pradesh. Kath is the dialectal variation of the Sanskrit word for Wood and Khuni is the dialectal variation of the Sanskrit word for Corner. These houses are built by the natives using local resources and to withstand the frequent seismic tremors that are generally felt through the torrid, mountainous terrains of Himachal Pradesh. Since the use of power-driven technology is minimal up in the mountains, most of the work is done manually and a close interdependence is created between the people and nature around them.
With this DIY Origami Kit, you could teach your children how to color into the lines of the picture and patiently assemble the house together, getting them to engage with crafty handiwork while learning about the history of the house. This activity will not only enhance your child’s awareness about environmental sustainability and critical thinking, but it will also stimulate creative thinking and encourage them to use their hands and create something beautiful. And maybe next time when you take them on a trip to the state of Himachal Pradesh, they might be able to point out a Kath-Khuni house somewhere in the mountain villages of Himachal Pradesh.
